At MHSD, we believe every person deserves dignity, stability, and the opportunity to thrive. Our Homeless Outreach Services are here to meet individuals and families where they are—offering support, compassion, and connection to resources that can make a difference.
Mental Health Support for Homeless Children and Youth
MHSD supports the mental health needs of homeless children and youth across Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard Parishes. We provide access to care through a straightforward referral process for families, caregivers, and school personnel.
Who Qualifies as Homeless?
Homeless children and youth are individuals who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence. This includes:
- Sharing housing due to loss of housing, economic hardship, or similar reasons
- Living in motels, hotels, trailer parks, or campgrounds
- Residing in emergency or transitional shelters
- Staying in public or private places not meant for regular sleeping (e.g., abandoned buildings, bus stations)
- Living in cars, parks, substandard housing, or similar unsafe or unstable environments
