It is anticipated that citizens evacuated due to Hurricane Gustav will begin returning this Thursday, September 4th, 2008 to the Union Passenger Terminal. The Metropolitan Human Services District Emergency Preparedness Teams that assisted in the evacuation from the Union Passenger Terminal are requested to partner with the Office of Public Health in order to assist those who require medical and emotional support to depart buses and trains. MHSD Emergency Preparedness Teams will also assist citizens to load buses that are scheduled to return them to the seventeen pick-up points. It is anticipated that the MHSD Team assignment will entail a similar orchestration and process that was executed for the evacuation. The first bus will arrive at 8 am, therefore we should plan on being present at 7am. The first train will arrive 3:30pm. It is necessary for volunteers to go back on the train to access those who will come on the train. Providers whose clients evacuated through the Union Passenger Terminal are also required to be present at the terminal at 7am on Thursday in order to facilitate the re-entry.
It is understandable that Metropolitan Human Services District Emergency Preparedness teams have traveled long distances to ensure the safety of their families. However, it is vitally important that every Metropolitan Human Services District Emergency Preparedness Team Staff member and Provider make every effort to be present at the Union Passenger Terminal to assist evacuated citizens to depart returning buses and trains. Metropolitan Human Services District Staff members can access the city with their name badges.
The Metropolitan Human Services Districts' Executive Team will have a conference call scheduled for tomorrow morning, Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008. Judge Calvin Johnson will apprise the Executive Team later of the time and number to call.
The Metropolitan Human Services District Office on Poydras Street has power and can be accessed.
